Gary Caldwell is brother to Steve and joined the Magpies in June 1998. He is the younger of the 2 brothers, and plays in the same position as Steve, central defence. Gary reads the game well and has excellent distribution with long and short passes.
A fixture in the Reserves back four, Gary did feature in a first team line up in May 2001 when he played, along with Steve, in the 3-0 win at West Bromwich Albion in a testimonial match for Baggies player Daryl Burgess in pre-season.
Gary has followed in his brothers footsteps by gaining a place in the Scotland Under 21 team, they played together against Belgium, and later, repeated Steve's feat by earning a full Scottish cap.
Caldwell spent a one-month loan period at Darlington in November/December 2001 and finished the 2001-02 season at Hibernian in the Scotland. He made his full Scotland debut against France in Paris in March 2002.
Caldwell hasn't yet played for Newcastle in the league, but has signed a new contract at the club, and was shipped off to Coventry on loan for the 2002-03 season, whre he impressed in a struggling side in the First Division. He will be hoping that he can copy brother Steve and get into the Toon first team in 2003-04, but may have to wait a little longer for his big break in the Premiership.
