Robbie Elliott returned to United in July 2001 from Bolton Wanderers on a free transfer after spending eight years at the club before leaving in 1997.
Left back Elliott played 99 games for United scoring 9 goals in his first spell at St. James' Park and has signed a four year contract with the Toon, keeping him at St. James' Park until the end of the 2004/05 season.
After leaving Tyneside he had four seasons at Bolton, making 103 appearances and scoring 7 goals. This though was disrupted by a broken leg suffered in September 1997.
Elliott joined United as a trainee back in 1989 from the Wallsend Boys Club and in his first season (1990/91) made 6 first team appearances, his debut coming as a 17-year-old substitute against Middlesbrough on 12 March 1991. Earlier in his career Elliott also won two England U21 caps, against Portugal and Austria.
After Elliott rejoined Newcastle, he failed to make the left back spot his own, and has had to settle for reserve team football. He was placed on the transfer list in June 2003 but vowed to fight for his place, but with Olivier Bernard currently in his way, it looks as though Elliott's days at United are numbered.
