Marcelino

Marcelino, who's full name Marcelino Elena Sierra, arrived at Newcastle for 5m from Real Mallorca with a big reputation, in the summer of 1999 but found his first season in English football restricted to just 15 games.

Marcelino began his career with his home town club Sporting Gijon, and joined Real Mallorca for 200,000 in 1996 and helping them to promotion to La Liga in his first season there. He was a regular first choice with Mallorca, and he finally earned his first full Spanish cap in 1998. He left Mallorca to join the Magpies after the Spanish side's exploits in the Cup Winners Cup final against Lazio at Villa Park.

A few more caps followed, but his failure to play regularly at St Jmes' Park during the 1999/2000 season cost him his place in the national side and he had to sit out Euro 2000 in Holland and Belguim.

In his second season, he only made six starting appearances for the Magpies after falling out of favour due to loss of form and numerous niggling injuries which kept him sidelined for long spells. In 2001-02, he was a firm fixture in the reserve team, but will hope to be fighting for the central defnder role against Nikos Dabizas, Andy O'Brien and new signing Titus Bramble.
