Christian Bassedas

Christian Bassedas was a summer purchase prior to the start of the 2000/01 season at 3m from Velez Sasfield in Argentina. Bassedas is one of Argentina's most accomplished midfield players.

He joined his only previous club, Velez Sarsfield, as a ten-year-old boy and played through all the youth ranks before turning professional in 1991. Bassedas has played over 300 professional games, he has 4 Argentinian Championship medals as well as victories in the 1994 Americas Cup and International Cup, plus the 1997 Recopa in Japan on his honours list.

He made his debut for Argentina's national team in 1994 and has gone on to win about a dozen full caps, scoring one goal, as well as winning 15 caps at Under 21 and 12 at Under 23 levels.

Bassedas was a close follower of English football, and he was delighted to get the chance to compete in the Premiership at the age of 27. Things were made easier for Newcastle because of his dual nationality with an Italian passport he did not need a work permit to come to England.

His start to his Premiership career was put on hold though due to a broken foot he suffered during Toon's pre season matches in Washington, USA, in July 2000.
That injury meant he didn't make his United debut until November and after that he struggled to adapt to the pace of the Premier League. He scored his only Newcastle goal to date against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in a 3-1 loss in that season. Hi second campaign didn't go well for him again because of the quality of Newacstle's midfield, and will do well to get a place in 2002-03.
